To what extent is the via negativa the only way to talk about God Within this essay I will be arguing that the via negativa is a very unhelpful way to talk about God as if we were to only talk about him negatively we would ultimately never know anything of God’s nature.

The Via Negativa, or Apophatic Way, is rather different. It assumes that our human language and understanding are incapable of describing the qualities of God (which most people would agree about, when push comes to shove, even those who use the Via Positiva ) and thus we are left with statements that describe what God is not (the negative way).
